Oil seems to be omnipresent. Not only is it used to power our cars and heat our homes, but it is also hidden in many everyday objects you might not expect.

Petrochemicals derived from oil and natural gas are used in more than 6,000 everyday products, according to Live Science.

Here are 10 things you probably didn't know were made from oil:

1. Chocolate:

Chocolate coatings sometimes contain edible paraffin, which is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil. It gives the chocolate its shine and helps it retain its hardness at high temperatures.

2. Toothpaste:

Toothpaste may contain petroleum derivatives such as polyethylene glycol, which are added for flavoring, antibacterial effect, and texture.

3. Perfumes:

Many fragrances contain oils derived from petroleum instead of natural essential oils. These oils provide a long-lasting scent and a wide range of odors.

4. Paint:

Plastic polymers in paint make it waterproof and durable. Plastic-based paints can adhere well to surfaces and are less likely to crack than other natural paints.

5. Tablets:

Many pills are coated with plastic to make them easier to swallow and prevent them from sticking together. Synthetic components also protect the active ingredients from decomposition.

6. Vanilla ice cream:

Synthetic oils derived from petroleum are often used in food flavors such as vanilla, almond, and lemon. These synthetic compounds can be engineered to replicate certain flavors, providing a consistent flavor profile.

7. Petroleum jelly:

Petroleum jelly is derived from natural gas and petroleum. It is used to protect and moisturize the skin.

8. Laxatives:

Laxatives are made from polyethylene glycol, which is also found in toothpaste. It draws water into the colon, making the stool softer.

9. Shaving cream:

Isopentane, which is used in shaving creams, is derived from crude oil. It helps break down sebum and makes hair stand up, making it easier to shave.

10. Air fresheners:

Air fresheners often contain oils derived from petroleum to create pleasant fragrances that can last longer and be more persistent than natural oils.
